Term 2, Weeks 6 and 7

Box ring

Instructions

  • Make a hollow form box ring from silver metal clay. The box ring must be embellished and feature the design of your choice. Embellishments can include carving, moulds, stone settings, stamping etc.

As depicted in the photos below, the initial design didn't quite work out as intended. I could not get the piece hot enough to solder the wire that ran through the stone without damaging it. I tried lots of techniques and materials to keep the stone cool, but it did not work. Rather than being deterred, I changed the design, choosing to bezel set a stone after all the heat required was applied.

While constructing the ring, it goes through an ‘ugly’ stage when all the elements are brought together (photo above). Box rings can be quite brutal pieces, but must be comfortable to wear.

I enjoyed this project immensely as I learned so much.
