Term 1

In September 2023 I embarked on the Diploma in Silver Metal Clay from the Jewellers Academy (https://www.jewellersacademy.com)

I was very excited to do this course, which is taught all online. I was a assigned a fantastic mentor and got to learn from some of the leading experts in Metal Clay jewellery. The course runs from September 2023 through to June 2024, with three terms, each term with more exciting and technical projects.

At the end of term we send all the pieces to the Jewellers Academy where they are marked by the assigned mentor.

Once I have received my marks, I will create a blog detailing the projects and how I went about them.

Metal clay is a wonderful medium with which to make jewellery. It is fine silver (meaning it is 99 parts silver) and is a recycled product which is sourced from old photographic and x-ray films, mixed with an organic binder and it’s original form is a clay-like material which can be moulded, shaped, cut and then fired. Once fired the binder is burnt off and what remains is a fine silver which can be hallmarked.

I love this material, it is so versatile and lends itself very well to the jewellery I want to make.

I’m now really looking forward to term 2.
