Term 2, Week 4

Shaped stone setting

Instructions

  • Make a wearable piece of jewellery featuring at least 4 fireable gemstones. For this piece you can choose what you make as long as it’s a wearable piece of jewellery e.g. ring, pendant, bracelet charm, earrings, bead etc. The four stones must all be on one piece of jewellery e.g. if you’re making a pair of earrings it must feature four stones per earring and not two on each earring. We want to see your ability to design and make a piece that has four stone settings minimum

Another enjoyable week, but it took a few attempts to get it right. Inspired by Art Deco, I decided on making a ring with baguette-shaped stones.

The first attempt came out really well, but there was a very small crack in the corner of the main stone. When firing, the blue stones went a very dark orange, so they were refired in carbon and the colour changed back to the original. The second attempt I fired the ring in carbon and it shattered when polishing as the silver had not sintered correctly. Third time lucky!
