Term 1, Weeks 6 and 7

Ring making in metal clay

Instructions

  • Make 2 flat band stacker rings with embellishments of your choice (at least one embellishment per ring). The rings should be the same ring size and fit together when worn.

  • Make a D profile ring with a stone set 5-6mm CZ fireable stone.

We were given two weeks to complete this project as it was a new technique for a number of us (including me).

Stacker rings

I have never made a ring in metal clay before and really enjoyed this week.

My first attempt at this was two thin rings with pink cubic zirconia stones inset (see pictures below). The rings came out ok and I was going to submit them, but I decided to use the lovely opal I have had in my drawer for ages and created two rings that I would actually wear. These are the ones I submitted for marking. The flat band ring can be worn either above or below the opal. Both rings contain 9ct gold nuggets and 24ct gold keum boo.

D-profile ring

This ring looked really big prior to firing and I was sceptical it would fit. The clay needs to be four sizes larger than the finished object. I was so pleased when it came out of the kiln and fits perfectly.
