Term 1, Week 3

Adding gold to Metal Clay

Instructions

  • One silver metal clay piece of your own design using keum boo as a central feature.

  • One pendant with a gold nugget setting.

Pegasus Galaxy

This idea came from a piece I made when I started my jewellery journey four years ago. I originally made something like this from sterling silver. Keum boo is a method of fusing a fine gauge of 24k gold over silver. This is a wonderful technique to add a touch of bling to pieces. The silver is heated and the gold layered on with pressure.

The main issue with this was to get the moon perfectly smooth before adding the gold - any dinks or scratches would show up when the gold was added. I managed to get the gold perfect. I added stars and a moon and added gold to them too. The bale on the back also has stars inlaid with gold.

Supernova

I melted some gold into quite a large nugget for the centre of the supernova. I added some smaller ones around the outside and used the keum boo technique on the smaller explosions. I wanted this design to be 3D so made two sets of the larger explosion arms - put two on the back and two on the front. Added liver of sulphur patina represents the dark of space.
